In this video, our speech therapist, Ms Magan discuss the Top 3 Speech Therapy Areas to Focus On for Your Child's Speech and Language Difficulties.

Hi, this is Magan from Scala at Amalfi Coast.

I'm a speech and language therapist and I help children or adults with language or speech issues.

Now, when children struggle with language, we may say they have specific language impairment or developmental language disorder, which I actually feel like I might have when I'm in a foreign country like Italy.

OK, I'm struggling with the language.
I don't speak the language.
I don't understand the language.

Now what does it mean? OK, the first area that gets affected is vocabulary.

So when I walk into a cafe just now, I've got no idea how to ask for what I want.
OK, so after resort, using very general words just pointing and saying this, this, this, OK, Italian questo or questo or questo and so forth, instead of being specific and asking for chocolate or asking for cherry or asking for nuts, so forth.

OK, so that's the first error vocabulary.
OK, let's have a different view.

The second area is what we call sentence structure.

As you can imagine, I can barely string words into sentences when I don't speak the language.

And also different languages actually have different sentence structures.
So in English, if I want to shop, I might say I would like to have a big bag, but from what little I know of Italian, in Italian I'll be asking for a bag big.

OK, so instead of saying.

Big bag.

It will be a borsa which is bag and Grande which is big? OK, so that's vocabulary and simple stuff.

It's alright.
Don't panic.

It's one of the local teenagers probably celebrating with some firecrackers.

OK, now the third area is grammar.

So again, would in English we have different grammatical forms.

I could say something like, OK, you should not throw this kind of paper into the toilet, or we will see this kind of paper should not be thrown into the toilet.
So we're using slightly different words, throw and thrown.

It will sound a bit funny if I, you know, change them and say something like you should not thrown this kind of paper into the toilet in the same way too.

It needs Helen in Italian.

They're going to be different forms of the same words, which again, you know, it's going to be very hard for me to grasp.

All right, so those are the three main areas.

I'm very blessed to be able to share this with you from Amalfi Coast.

I hope you enjoy this video.
